Pushing Against the Flames
PROGRAM NOTE
|
The island of Kahoʻolawe, the smallest of the volcanic islands in Hawaiʻi, has long served as a place of cultural and spiritual significance for Hawaiians. Tragically, during the second World War the island was used as a training ground for the United States military for bomb testing and much of the area was damaged. Through decades of protest and discussions with the federal government, the island has been returned to the jurisdiction of the state of Hawaiʻi and current efforts to restore the island to its prior condition are underway. Pushing Against the Flames was written as an homage to those who fought for the return of this sacred land and the restoration of a once beautiful place.
