Stranded in the Clouds (구름에 갇힌)
PROGRAM NOTE
|
Stranded in the Clouds follows the tale of a recurring dream I experienced in my youth: I gained the ability to traverse the skies, and every time I soared through the clouds I would inevitably become trapped among them; stranded in a nebulous world of adventure. Excitement became anxiety, and anxiety became a solemn resolution to my fate. Of course, I would always awake to the grounded reality of my bedroom, but my heart often felt as if it belonged to the clouds.
The progression of the music follows closely to the direction of my dream. Beginning with a quick, playful series of figures, the music soars through a series of rhythmically driven transformations. As it becomes clearer that I am getting lost in the clouds, a gradual increase in dissonance is introduced. The breaking point sees a dramatic drop in tempo, and the gayageum plays a rhythmically disjointed, floating, melodically driven section indicating the mysterious qualities of the clouds. Concluding the piece is a solemn and stately repetition of a high tone symbolic of the faraway, lost world as I accept my fate in the clouds. |
